When visiting Denmark you will have plenty of choices when it comes to food as Danes generally love to eat good food.
If you want to dig into some local dishes here are three you should try while visiting: Danish pastry, Danish hotdogs and open sandwiches (smørrebrød).
Danish pastry: You will find Danish pastry in every bakery and there are many of them. You will also find bakeries inside supermarkets and even in the small convinient stores referred to as ‘Kiosks’.
If you are in Copenhagen we recommend you to get your pastry from one of the famous bakeries such as Lagkagehuset or La Glace even though those places are a bit more expensive than the regular bakery.
Lagkagehuset is a chain of bakeries with shops all over the city. If you are in the city center go to their shop at Strøget (Frederiksberggade 21, 1459 København K) or at Kultorvet. You can find a full overview of all their bakeries here. Another excellent choice to get some Danish pastry is La Glace, which is Denmark´s oldest confectionary located at Skoubogade 3, 1158 København K.
Danish hotdogs: You can find stands with Danish hotdogs all around. Just look for the small stands on wheels resembling a caravan. Ask for a hotdog with everything and be aware that you won’t be able to kiss someone for the next hours. Danish hotdogs are small but full of taste and will open your appetite for more.
Smørrebrød: Smørrebrød is an open sandwich served in both lunch restaurants, some cafés and shops around the city that exclusively sell these open sandwiches. They have a sign that says ‘Smørrebrød’ and you can see them through their window. Try whatever you see and like, but ask for the ingredients just to be on the safe side.
If you want to eat it the real Danish way, make sure to flush it down with some Danish snaps and beer. If you are in Copenhagen consider booking a table at one of the best smørrebrød restaurants in the city, Schønnemann, where the selection of sandwiches is unbelievable.
